Some senior sessions just leave a mark on your heart, and Emilee's was certainly one of those. I've known her Mom for years, so when they asked me to shoot her senior photos, I was all in!
From the moment we started planning, I knew this wasn't going to be a session built around trendy poses or checking off a Pinterest inspiration board. It was going to be about telling her unique story.
Honestly and truly, those always end up being my favorite.
Emilee has such a calm, genuine personality. She's one of those people who doesn't have to try to stand out; she just has this sweet confidence that shines through.
Between her love of music, spending time with a good book, and the beautiful North Dakota outdoors, every part of her session felt authentic and just perfectly HER!
I always tell my seniors that their senior session shouldn't look like everyone else's.
Yes, I want your gallery to be beautiful. But more than that, I want someone to look at your photos years from now and immediately think, "That is so you."
For Emilee, that meant bringing along two things she genuinely loves, her saxophone and some books.
Her saxophone represents countless hours of practice, performances, friendships, and memories from high school in the band. It's a huge part of who she is, so of course, it deserved a place in her senior gallery.
Then we ended with a couple cozy studio portraits of her reading. Those images have such a peaceful feeling to them, and they fit Emilee's personality perfectly.
Those personal touches are what make senior photos timeless.
One of my favorite things about working with seniors is helping them realize they don't have to fit inside one look.
Emilee changed outfits throughout the evening, which gave her gallery so much variety without ever feeling like we were trying too hard.
We started with a cozy, casual outfit around some custom setups on my ranch before wandering through the trees. Later, she changed into a beautiful floral dress that fit perfectly with the rolling North Dakota countryside.
She even incorporated a vintage pickup, hay bales, country roads, and wide-open prairie views that feel so true to where we live.
Each location added something different while still telling one complete story.
That's always my goal.
I truly don't think North Dakota gets enough credit.
People always think you have to travel somewhere incredible for beautiful senior pictures, but then evenings like this happen.
Evenings with golden sunlight filtering through the trees, gravel roads, rolling hills, a colorful sunset reflecting over the water, and open fields that seem to go on forever.
There's just something about summer and fall evenings around Bismarck that never gets old for me.
When the light is right, Mother Nature really does most of the work. That's why I try to do all my senior sessions around 6 PM for the perfect golden hour shots!
If you're planning your own senior session, here's one piece of advice I hope you'll remember: bring the things that make your story yours.
For Emilee, that was music and books.
For someone else, it might be volleyball, hunting, horses, dance, art, fishing, baking, or your family farm.
Those aren't props for your photos, but they're memories.
Years from now, those photos won't just remind you what you looked like.
They'll remind you who you were, and I think that's pretty special.
Emilee's session is such a good reminder that the best senior pictures aren't the ones that follow every trend.
They're the ones that feel honest.
The ones that include the hobbies you've loved, the places that feel like home, and the little details that make this season of life unforgettable.
If you're looking for a Bismarck, ND senior photographer who wants your session to feel relaxed, personal, and genuinely you, I'd love to help create something you'll still love years after graduation.
I'm now booking Class of 2027 seniors in Bismarck, Mandan, and all around Central North Dakota!
