If you’re a high school senior in Burleigh County, there’s a good chance your to-do list is getting real. Between prepping for graduation, soaking up every last bit of senior year, and planning for what’s next, it’s a lot. One of the biggest decisions on the horizon is choosing the right college.
As someone who spends a lot of time with high school seniors and their families, I know just how exciting and overwhelming this season can be.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to college. Are you hoping to stay close to home here in Central ND? Want to branch out and explore a new city? Are you someone who thrives in a big lecture hall, or do you prefer a smaller, tight-knit campus?
Start by listing out what’s important to you, not just what everyone else is doing. Your preferences matter.
Yes, academics are important. But also think about campus life, support services, clubs, athletics, faith-based organizations, all the things that will support you as a whole person, not just a student.
Don’t be afraid to ask real questions on your campus visits, especially if it’s a place you’ll be calling home for the next few years.
Here in North Dakota, we’ve got some great schools. From Bismarck State College to the University of Mary, UND, NDSU, and so many more, staying close to home doesn’t mean you’re missing out.
If your heart’s close to home, that’s more than okay. You can still have an incredible college experience right here in the region you know and love.
You can read all the brochures in the world, but nothing beats setting foot on campus. See how it feels. Picture yourself walking to class, hanging out with friends, and grabbing coffee between lectures. The vibe matters.
At the end of the day, choosing a college is your decision. Yes, it’s smart to weigh all the pros and cons, and look at costs, but if you visit a place and something clicks, don’t ignore that.
And I know this isn't a popular opinion.... but it NEEDS to be said! You do NOT have to go to college! I know, I get alot of hate for my opinion on this... but I don't care because it's the truth!
You can take a break year and get a job while you decide for sure what college you want to attend. You can even decide a vocational school may be a better fit for you, or yes just SKIP college altogether and get a job and start working right away.
Go with your gut and follow your dreams. If we're being honest, college wouldn't even be on the path to alot of peoples dreams. You don't have to be pressured into college simply because that's what everyone else does.
There I said it and I mean it. Don't rush into anything, and make sure whatever decision you make or whatever college you choose, is the one that feels RIGHT for YOU!
This season is full of big choices, but it’s also full of opportunity. Give yourself grace, do your homework, and trust that the right path will become clear.
